Becoming a BARFer

Dog owners who want to feed BARF must find a source of raw meaty bones, offal and vegetables plus whatever supplements are appropriate to balance the diet or treat particular disease problems. (Offal consists of fresh and raw internal organs including liver, kidneys, heart and green tripe.) The good news is that Dr B's Genuine Aussie R.A.W. PattiesTM are now available and are designed as a BARF diet. These make this whole process much easier. However, even with the availability of such foods, it is essential that dog owners fully understand what BARF diets are all about. That means learning about BARF!

If you want to learn about a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food Diet - and there is little doubt that using the manufacturer's recommended fuels, spare parts and lubricants is always the best insurance against breakdowns - then I strongly suggest you get hold of - and read - Dr Ian Billinghurst's books - Give Your Dog a Bone, Grow Your Pups With Bones and The BARF Diet. In the case of cats, until the cat book becomes available, follow the ideas in Give Your Dog a Bone except leave out most but not all of the vegetables.

These books contain the information you need to set your dog on the path to true health. The other source of information and encouragement will be one of the many raw feeding lists now on the Internet.
